Different Dining Room Table Materials

While this website is about glass table tops, if you are purchasing a dining room table, there are other types of tables you may want to consider for your dining area:

Type #1) Wooden Table – The wood table is the most standard table for the dining room. It is long lasting, has an elegant look, has a variety of different finishes, and can go with almost any kind of decoration. For these simple reasons, it is the most popular table type. One major disadvantage though is that it can start to warp over time due to moisture in the air, and after a while will start to look worn. Another con is that it can be quite expensive.

Type #2) Veneer Table – The veneer table top is made to look like wood, but won’t warp over time like wood. Also, because it isn’t made from wood, it is much less expensive. One con, aside from the fact that it easy to tell it isn’t real wood (and therefore has a cheap look to it), is that it is less long-lasting, and easily chips at the edges. Over time the veneer will start to peel away too, exposing an ugly under part.

Type #3) Plastic Dining Table – The plastic dining table is cheap, light, and durable. Although it has a cheap look to it, this is not necessarily a bad thing if you are using it for the outdoors. It is quite ideal for the outdoors because it won’t stain or warp or rot or anything. It is quite durable and comes in a wide variety of colors and designs, yet is still the cheapest of all the options.

Type #4) Metal Table – A metal table is the kind of table you would typically find at a diner or bar. These are resilient and long lasting, and won’t ever rot or warp. A lot of black vanity tables are made out of metal. The only risk is that they might start to rust, but they are maintained so easily that this shouldn’t be an issue or concern. They are very heavy, which could be a pro or con depending on who you ask. The only major con is that they can be quite expensive.

Pros and Cons of Glass Table Tops

Glass table tops are very popular for dining room tables, but there are some pros and cons you should consider before choosing this type of table instead of a more popular choice like wood or metal.

Pros:

One pro of owning a glass table top is it is very fashionable, elegant, and can fit into any room decor. Glass is also a very popular material for a girls vanity table for these very same reasons. Glass table tops can fit into a modernly decorated dining room or an old fashioned one. Not only that, if you are tired of the base for your table or are redecorating, you can replace the base without having to get a new glass table top. Glass is basically a timeless piece; as your furniture style starts changing and the fashion of furniture evolves, glass will never go out of style.

Another pro of a glass table top is that it is very sturdy and strong. Glass is one of the strongest materials out there, and won’t chip or wear like wood does. It also won’t scratch like wood or metal might with silverware. As long as you have a steady base for the glass, you won’t have to ever worry about it breaking unless it gets smashed REALLY hard.

Cons:

One of the most obvious cons of owning a glass table top is that they get dirty very very easily. When food or crumbs fall on the table, they are much more visible than on a wooden, metal, or plastic tabletop. And not just that, even things like hand prints and minor smudges glare at you when you look at the table in the light. Basically, if you purchase a glass table top, expect to be going through a lot of Windex to keep it looking good!

Another con is that in spite of the fact that glass is a very strong material, if it were to drop or someone were to break it, the damage would be much more dangerous to those around when it happened than if it happened with a table of another material. It would take a lot to do, but if it happens, glass pieces would fly everywhere in the explosion and could potentially harm whoever was around at the time. This is a very unlikely occurrence though.
